ETHNO/CA NEWS: EMAIL DISCUSSION LISTS

 There are now four email discussion lists that routinely have contributions referring to ethnomethodology and/or conversation analysis:

COMSERVE'S ETHNO HOTLINE

This is an electronic 'news group' exclusively devoted to our field,  managed by COMSERVE. This 'hotline' is used by many colleagues to distribute or ask for various kinds of information or to participate in discussions. It is a free electronic service to which you can subscribe my sending a mail JOIN ETHNO FIRSTNAME LASTNAME to [COMSERVE@CIOS.ORG]. If you have any difficulty, you may contact the staff at [SUPPORT@CIOS.ORG]. Address your contributions to [ETHNO@cios.ORG].

THE LANG-USE LIST

There is another list that also carries a lot of EM and especially CA-relevant information and discussions: the LangUse list, devoted to studies of Language Use. It has been  instituted by Anita Pomerantz then at Temple University, but is now managed by Alan Firth at Aalborg University, Denmark.

Procedures for subscribing are as follows: send an email message to: http://www.list.hum.aau.dk/mailman/listinfo/languse. In the body (*not* the 'subject' line) of the email, write: subscribe languse

That is all. Do not add your name or your email address. Shortly after that, two messages will be sent to you, the first confirming your subscription, the second containing instructions on the various automated Majordomo commands. Please keep this second message for reference purposes.

Once you are resubscribed, you will be able to use the list as normal. The address for all correspondence will be:

CONVERSA, an 'Iberian' list on CA & DA

This is a new (fall '97) general discussion list, conversa, for people working in conversation analysis or discourse analysis in Spanish, Catalan, and Galizan/Portuguese. A more detailed description of the list - in Spanish - is included below. Please note that the languages of the list are Spanish, Catalan, and Galizan/Portuguese.

Persons interested in joining conversa should send a message to James Herron, Department of Anthropology, University of Michigan .

"Kaiwa", a list on Japanese CA

This list offers an informal platform for discussing CA of Japanese materials. If you are interested, all that is needed it to send a subscription message to the listserv.

To subscribe to the list send a message to: listserv@ma1.sg-u.ac.jp

(WARNING:  that's a "one" after "ma" not  an "L".  Also make sure to use the dash character in "sg-u" and not an underline character "sg_u")

In the body of the message (not in the subject line) type: subscribe kaiwa YOUR NAME; For example:  subscribe kaiwa Donald Carroll

After subscribing you will receive a welcome message which generally outlines the purpose of the list.   Let me stress that this new list is, in no way, competitive with either ETHNO or LANG-USE.  It is not a splintering off but rather a natural complementary outgrowth.  Being a smaller and more specialized list, I hope it will provide a casual and comfortable forum for
people who may have had something to say but were hesitant to post to a larger list.

The Therapeutic Discourse List (therapeutic-discourse-l)

Beginning in January 2004, the Therapeutic discourse listserve has been developed as a forum for researchers and practitioners interested in therapeutic discourse. The listserve also aims to promote wide-ranging theoretical, research-oriented and practice-focused discussions about communicative interactions where the intention is to be helpful. The Therapeutic Discourse listserve hopes to promote closer dialogue between professional helpers and those who research their conversations with clients.

The internet server hosting this list will be housed at the University of Calgary (in Canada). To subscribe as a listserve member, please do EXACTLY the following:
